POMPEO MASSANI ~ A Great Vintage

Pompeo Massani was born in Florence, Italy in December of 1850 and died on the 25th of August 1920. He received his formal art training at the Academy des Beaux-Arts in Florence, and studied with Michele Gordisiani (1830-1909). After having completed his studies, he traveled widely, and then returned to his native land to paint wonderful renditions of peasant life, especially tavern scenes depicting wine making and celebrations. Massani exhibited at the Salon from 1879 and also exhibited in Rovigo, Genes and Florence. He was awarded the prestigious Chevalier de la Couronne d’Italy.

Massani’s vast knowledge of figure painting is demonstrated in A Great Vintage, by the excellency of his figures. In this painting, each man is positioned exactly for the job that he is doing. This painting is busy, and splendid in composition, draughtsmanship and understanding. This beautiful example of Massani’s work is presented in pristine condition, in its original period frame and is signed P. Massani, Firenze, upper right corner.
